Israel Eliminates Hezbollah Commander Near Beirut… Ceasefire in Jeopardy

(Seoul=News) The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been put to the test as the Israeli military announced on the 7th (local time) that it had eliminated a senior Hezbollah commander near Lebanon's capital, Beirut.

According to the New York Times (NYT), Israeli authorities stated that one key Hezbollah commander was killed in the airstrike. This military action near Beirut marks the first such operation since both sides agreed to a ceasefire. Although the truce has thus far prevented all-out war, it had failed to halt sporadic clashes.

The airstrike carries even greater implications as it comes at a time when the United States is dedicating its full efforts to stabilizing the region in order to advance diplomatic negotiations with Iran. Washington's strategy is to convert the Lebanon ceasefire into a lasting peace and use it as leverage to make headway in nuclear and security negotiations with Iran.

However, as Israel expands the scope of its military operations to areas near Beirut, the possibility of Hezbollah retaliation has also been raised. Hezbollah is an armed group that receives direct support from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and observers suggest this incident could have negative repercussions extending all the way to the Iran-U.S. negotiating table.

The Lebanese government immediately denounced the Israeli airstrike as a violation of sovereignty and is reportedly preparing to file a complaint with the UN Security Council. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is also closely monitoring the developments.

Middle East experts analyzed that "Israel is testing the limits of the ceasefire," adding that "the gap between U.S. diplomatic efforts and Israel's military approach is gradually widening."
