Ukraine and Russia Intensify Attacks Amid Conflicting Ceasefire Proposals... At Least 20 Dead

Amid Russian airstrikes that have killed at least 20 people in Ukraine, Kyiv has announced a ceasefire beginning on the 6th, while Moscow has declared a temporary halt in hostilities ahead of Victory Day. However, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the proposals, as the conditions of the two sides' ceasefires differ.

As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year, Russian attacks have killed at least 20 people, even as Kyiv and Moscow engage in a war of nerves by proposing differing ceasefire plans.

Britain's BBC reported on the 5th (local time) that Russian airstrikes have killed at least 20 people across Ukraine. The attacks came shortly after both sides announced their respective ceasefire schedules, raising growing concerns within the international community.
Russian President Vladimir Putin unilaterally declared a temporary halt in hostilities ahead of the May 9 Victory Day military parade. In response, the Ukrainian government announced it would begin its own ceasefire on the 6th and would 'act symmetrically' in response to Russia's actions. In other words, if Russia halts attacks, Ukraine will also stop, and if attacks resume, Ukraine will immediately retaliate.

However, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of both sides' ceasefire proposals, as their timing and conditions do not align. In particular, the prevailing view is that since Russia's ceasefire is merely a temporary measure for the Victory Day event, it is unlikely to lead to substantive peace negotiations.

Kyiv has criticized Russia, saying that despite the ceasefire announcement, Russian forces have not stopped missile and drone attacks targeting the eastern front and major cities. According to Ukrainian authorities, the attacks have caused numerous civilian casualties, and residential facilities and energy infrastructure have also suffered extensive damage.

The international community is watching closely to see whether the two countries can agree on a substantive halt in hostilities around the May 9 Victory Day. However, the dominant assessment is that with structural conflicts across the front line still unresolved, it remains unclear whether a short-term ceasefire will lead to genuine peace.
