Hantavirus Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise Ship... 3 Passengers Dead, Americans Quarantined

A rare hantavirus outbreak has occurred on a cruise ship sailing the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in the deaths of three passengers and infecting multiple others. U.S. health authorities have placed American passengers who disembarked under quarantine, while moving to calm public concerns by stating that the risk of infection to the general public is "very low."

According to foreign media reports on the 11th (local time), one passenger aboard the cruise ship tested positive for the Andes virus, while another is showing mild symptoms. The Andes virus is known as one of the rare strains within the hantavirus family for which human-to-human transmission has been reported.

Health authorities are conducting additional tests to determine the exact cause of death of the three deceased, while simultaneously carrying out contact tracing investigations on other passengers. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising quarantined passengers to closely monitor themselves for the onset of symptoms.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through the excrement of rodents, and infection causes symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, and difficulty breathing. If the illness progresses to a severe stage, it can lead to pulmonary syndrome or renal syndrome, which are known to have high fatality rates.

Health experts pointed out that it is urgent to investigate how the virus entered and spread within the confined space of a cruise ship. The cruise line is reportedly conducting full-ship disinfection and adjusting future schedules. Health authorities emphasized, "This is not a situation that warrants panic, but a careful response is necessary."
